Running! Yes, running. Nah uh, no way...
I was never a sports person, unless you consider e-sports which doesn't exactly promote physical health.
A few weeks ago I decided it was time to make a difference, I started the Couch to 5k program.
Are you like me and found yourself unable to run for more than a few minutes without losing your breath?
"What's going on here!" I can perfectly recall memories of a child running nonstop just because... I honestly have no idea! After all, being a child doesn't really make sense.
Still, I figured there is something wrong. It can't be good to be so incapable of physical activity - I am not overweight or ill, so what's going on?
I felt inspired by my colleagues who aren't only technical but also highly motivated and physically fit, seeing them running half a marathon while I could barely run for 5 minutes, I knew I had to do something.
Running has many benefits, it improves your health and weight, makes your body stronger and more durable, reduces risk of diseases and some people claim it can even improve mental ability and happiness.
Honestly, I wasn't too convinced about the mental ability and happiness part - sports was never fun in my opinion. I am surprised to find my perspective was changed so much after a few weeks!
Now I am finding running to be kinda fun! I wake up at 6am, go for a run, take a shower and I feel great and more focused. I also feel I achieved something and that's awesome.
This is how I started: I downloaded a C25K app on my phone. There are many of them but this is the one I used. I set an alarm for 6am every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday and I started running.
In the beginning it wasn't easy but I found the program pushed me just about as far as I could go. The only thing I had to do is stick to it.
At my third run I already felt better. I could do the first week's program and started looking forward to the second week. The feeling was great!
Every run is concluded with a shower which feels like a reward and makes the morning much nicer. The day starts with full energy, mental awakeness and focus.
Ok, there was one more thing I prepared other than the app, this was running shoes. Get comfortable shoes to run with!
It is also recommended to get comfortable clothes for sports that absorb sweat and a sports bra if you are a lady. I only got these after a few runs, until then I ran with a T-shirt and less ideal pants. It sure feels nicer to be equipped!
If you are running with your phone as to follow the C25K program then consider getting an armband to safely secure your phone.
The last thing you need is to stick with it! You don't have to like it at the start but decide you are doing it. You are going to wake up and do it, or maybe at your lunch break or after work. I found morning better because there are no excuses :)
If you can, get a running buddy! I sometimes run with a friend of mine and it is way more fun to run together. You can also motivate each other and make sure you are both making progress.
